Shane Bowden
Shane Bowden is a contemporary Neo-Expressionist, Pop artist, photographer, and printmaker, recognized for his vibrant and dynamic approach to art.
Bowden spent nearly two decades living in the USA and Japan (2001–2019), where he gained global recognition for his colorful, high-energy pop art silkscreen prints, which draw comparisons to icons like Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg. His work is a fusion of nostalgia and innovation, with rapid-fire juxtapositions of imagery that reflect the bold visual language of the 1960s. Using collage techniques, unexpected material contrasts, and expressive paint smears, Bowden’s pieces bridge the worlds of Action Painting and Pop Art, while also exploring the complex relationship between art and life—an area he has uniquely carved out for himself.

Returning to Sydney in 2019, Bowden has brought fresh passion and inspiration to his practice. His current body of work blends Pop-stractivism with Neo-Expressionism, characterized by rich layers of color, spontaneous charcoal and graphite marks, and vivid oil stick highlights. His pieces often evoke a sense of controlled chaos, reflecting his love of travel, the cultures he encounters, and the people he meets. The resulting works feel both lurid and harmonious, with contrasting elements that capture the energy and fluidity of his creative process.

An artist who defies easy categorization, Bowden continues to evolve stylistically, driven by an intuitive desire for freedom and exploration within the visual arts.
Bowden has been a finalist in the prestigious Archibald Prize (2010 and 2019) and the Doug Moran Portrait Prize (2010, 2011, and 2019). He was also honored with the Global Art Awards in 2015 (Tokyo) and 2016 (Amsterdam).
His art has been featured in numerous films, including Sex and the City, The Carrie Diaries, John Wick 2, The Big Bang Theory, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Get Him to the Greek, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and This Is 40. His works have also appeared in television shows such as Takeshi's Castle (Japan), Keeping Up with the Kardashians, The Block, Million Dollar Decorators, and Selling Sunset.
Bowden's work is represented in the permanent collections of major institutions, including the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, LACMA, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, and the Bromer Kunst in Switzerland.
